The Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.) was founded in 1967 by Ray Scott, an outdoorsman from Montgomery, Alabama1. Scott envisioned creating a credible and honorable tournament trail for bass fishing, which led to the formation of B.A.S.S2. The organization’s first tournament, held in 1967, attracted 106 fishermen and marked the beginning of competitive bass fishing
In the early years, B.A.S.S. quickly grew, and by 1968, it had published its first issue of Bassmaster Magazine, which has since become a cornerstone of bass fishing literature. The organization expanded its reach by establishing the Bassmaster Tournament Trail and the Bassmaster Classic, recognized as the world championship of bass fishing
In 2010, B.A.S.S. was purchased by an ownership group led by Alabama businessmen Don Logan and Jim Copeland, along with veteran broadcaster Jerry McKinnis. The organization was then relocated from Celebration, Florida, to Birmingham, Alabama, in 20111. In 2017, Anderson Media Corp. acquired a majority interest in B.A.S.S
Today, B.A.S.S. boasts a membership of over 515,000 members worldwide, with a significant presence in the United States1. The organization connects with bass anglers through its media vehicles, including Bassmaster Magazine, The Bassmaster television program, and various online platforms
The popularity of B.A.S.S. can be attributed to its comprehensive approach to promoting bass fishing as a sport and lifestyle. The organization’s tournaments, media presence, and conservation efforts have contributed to the growth of a multibillion-dollar fishing industry. The Bassmaster Classic, in particular, has become a major event, attracted tens of thousands of spectators, and offered substantial prize money
The Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.) has played a pivotal role in the development and popularization of competitive bass fishing. From its humble beginnings in 1967 to its current status as a leading authority on bass fishing, B.A.S.S. continues to connect with and inspire anglers around the world
